This year’s basketry festival covers the length and breadth of basketry. Watch chair “bottoming” demonstrations, rush mat plaiting, trug-making, giant basket weaving, making string out of nettles and much more.
This year we have a table of experts you can chat to about the history of basketry, with examples of basketry from around the world. There will be lots of opportunities to “have-a-go” as well as 8 bookable workshops, lasting 45 minutes (£10 each).
Look around at the stalls and you will see that many basketmakers run courses: meet the tutors for a chat, and sign up for future courses. Teas and coffees, and delicious cakes and biscuits from a local baker. A choice of street food to sustain you while you are busy weaving. The bar opens from 3, if you need something stronger!
The Ceilidh starts at 6 with 9 Dead Mice and their caller!

Weaving Workshops
Have fun, learn a new skill using environmentally friendly and sustainable materials, taught by experienced and talented craftspeople. Each workshop focuses on different aspects of basketry. This year we'll be making mini christmas trees, reindeer, gift tags, bangles, catalan platters, bird feeders, woven pot covers, netted stones and more!
Our workshops will run throughout the afternoon. Reserve your spot and we'll get in touch soon to arrange exactly which and what time your workshop will be.
Weave away the Rubbish!
At the Basketry Festival this year, we're very excited to be hosting a very unique 2 -hour workshop with Danny Manning.
Danny Manning will demonstrating and teaching two basketry techniques (coiling and twining) with a range of beach and downland materials to make a small ring/ jewellery basket.
These techniques can be applied to an infinite variety of projects from baskets, placemats, sculpture, lighting and jewellery. Students will get the opportunity to discuss these options and look at a variety of examples with the view of continuing this craft at home.
£5 will be donated to Love Your Ouse
